Military Standards

1.aquila    (eagle) , the standard of the legion. It was made of silver or bronze, mounted   
 on a pole, and carried by the eagle-bearer, the aquilifer. The loss of the eagle   
 was considered a catastrophe.

   2. signum, the standard of the cohort or maniple, also mounted on a pole. Its    
beare was called the signifer. 

   3. vexillum, a rectangular banner or flag, attached to a staff. Vexilla served    
as standards for the auxiliaries. A red vexillum over the commander's tent was   
 signal to prepar for battle.
