Chapter 16
Today, we will be looking at the third declension adjectives. As mentioned
before, adjectives are words which modify nouns or pronouns. Up to now, we’ve
learned the first & second declension adjectives. This time we will learn
the third declension adjectives. They are called third declension adjectives
because, you guessed it, they take the third declension endings. Well at least
most of the time. There are three exceptions.
First, all the ablative singulars end in an “i”. Second, the genitive
plural is “ium” not “um”. And last, “ia”
is the nominative and accusative plural for the neuter.
The Masculine and Feminine are usually the same, while the neuter differs a bit.
E.G.
M F N
Nom fortis fortis forte
Gen fortis fortis fortis
Dat forti forti forti
Acc fortem fortem forte
Abl forti forti forti
Nom fortes fortes fortia
Gen fortium fortium fortium
Dat fortibus fortibus fortibus
Acc fortes fortes fortia
Abl fortibus fortibus fortibus
Remember the Rule with Adjectives:
Adjectives agree with the noun or pronoun they are modifying in number, gender, and case…But they do not have to look the same.
As an example
Nom nauta fortis
Gen nautae fortis
Dat nautae forti
Acc nautam fortem
Abl nauta forti
Nom nautae fortes
Gen nautarum fortium
Dat nautis fortibus
Acc nautas fortes
Abl nautis fortibus
The Noun and adjective agree in number gender and case but they do not look the same.
Now let’s try a few adjectives and let’s see if we can decline them.
Let’s do:
Mens bona
Bellum forte
Omnis populus
