LANGUAGE
The Roman alphabet, derived orginally from that of the Phoenicians, is used today through out most of the world. Latin is the basis of the Romance languages, the chief ones being Italian, Spanish, French, Portuguese, and Romanian. English, though not a Romance language, has been profoundly influenced by Latin. Roman numerals are still limited use as chapter heading in books, as hours on the faces of clocks, as dates on conerstones of building, etc.
